George Mason University (Fairfax, VA) is hosting an FREE Oboe Day on Saturday, March 31, from 10 am-3 pm, concluding with an awesome Senior Oboe Performance Recital given by one of my colleagues at 4.

Clinics include:
“Fixing Up Store-Bought Reeds” by Professor Lorrie Berkshire Brown, very useful for where we’re short on time;
“Woodwind Doubling and Improvisation” by international recording artist Charlie Pillow, where we invite you to dabble in some jazz oboe; and even
“The Oboe as a Global Endeavor,” hosted by T.W. Howarth of London manager, Michael Britton.

Be sure to also stop by our “World of Oboe Petting Zoo,” to try out oboes, oboe d’amores, and English horns.  We also have several double reed technicians on hand, for all your repairing needs.

Visit http://mason.gmu.edu/~aloerch1/oboe.html for more details.  Any questions, just e-mail me at aloerch1@gmu.edu.

Hey chaps...so the other day I remembered a piece I played awhile ago and am looking for a recording of it because I really liked that piece. The piece was by Eugene Bozza, for oboe and English horn, and two of the movements I played were Pastorale Provencal and Sous les Etoiles. I don't remember the title but it was a really cool duet and I want to hear it again, so can anyone tell me where I can find a recording or something? Thanks!

Hi everyone!

My rental English horn with an actual English horn reed came in the mail yesterday. (I got the oboe II part for Scheherazade and need to cover English horn.) It's the first time I've really played the instrument. (The other time I was returning my teacher's from repair and I tried it with an oboe reed to see if I could make it sound. *cough* Doesn't count.)

And oh my god, the only thing stopping me from playing it all day is the arm strain (well, that and my family's asleep, it's 6:18 AM). I LOOOVE it!!! After getting over that weird two-key thing instead of half holing at the top and getting used to the key spacing (and after nearly impaling myself with the reed because I was expecting to hold the EH closer), it was an easy switch! It's not like between oboe and violin, where it's sooo completely different...

I just wanted to share that as a first-time English horn player, I'm happy as a clam. xD Wish I had more music for it.

Hey, everyone! My band teacher is finally giving me some English horn music to play for our next concert (I'm primarily an oboist), but the problem is that the English horn I have is old and kind of crappy. (It's pretty much all I could afford after buying a Loree oboe!) I was wondering, do any of you knew of a place I could rent a decent English horn from for a month or two that isn't too expensive? The school would be paying for the rental, so I'm on a tight budget. The only rental sites I've found are Midwest Musical Imports and Forrests Music. Any help is greatly appreciated! :)

Hi, my name is Lynn. I'm 15 and I've played oboe for almost three years and English horn for about eight months. I don't have a ton of experience with the instrument, so I'm hoping maybe someone with more experience might be able to give me a few pointers? Thanks!

My dad is selling my Hiniker bocals on eBay so I can buy a new one. The intonation isn't quite right for me (these bocals came with the horn when we bought it used a few years ago), so I am looking for something better.

This is a 2 and this is a 2-

Thanks :-)

Hey there EH players!
After much searching, I found an EH on usedoboes.com, a Selmer for around $2500. I want to get it, for I am a poor college student in desperate need of an EH, but first I am asking your opinions on it. Should I? Is it good, or will I be spending money for a crappy horn? Thanks in advance :)

Hi guys...I'm going to college soon, and...well, to put it simply, I need an English horn.

This summer when I was doing a show I discovered how much a poor quality EH can hurt me...part of the reason some of the crap that happened during the show happened was because my EH was borrowed from my school and was probably the worst instrument ever played (even my oboe teacher was shocked at it), and it hurt me a lot in this show. So I realized...as I'm going to be an oboe major, a good EH is absolutely 100% necessary.

So now...well, I'm looking for one.

I'm a college freshman, so my funds are obviously limited. I was wondering if you guys could reccomend where I could look for a reasonably priced horn and what kind I should be looking for. Thanks in advance, it'd be a great help :)

Hi, I'm ally. I'm 18, and a sophomore in college.

I am a music major at Florida State. I have been playing oboe for almost seven years, and english horn for three. My oboe is a Loree that is older than my mother, and as of yet, I do not have my own e.h.

I am majoring in music ed, and I plan to master in either oboe performance, or ethnomusicology (I still have pleeeeenty of time to decide).

So, that's me I guess.
